Lately I’ve been remembering food from my childhood – fresh, plain sugared donuts from a local market (not mass produced by a donut shop), this specific brand of instant noodles in beef flavor, and juicy, red hotdogs. If I were actually craving for these food then I’d be in trouble, because the noodles and the hotdogs had been ‘reformulated’, and I’d not seen plain sugared donuts in more than a decade.
Along with remembering food from my childhood are the memories themselves. My older sister used to cook the instant noodles and hotdogs for us during cold rainy days, and we would eat and watch TV while eating. I could almost hear the rain on our roof and on the streets outside.
As for the donuts, my mother occasionally bought them after buying meat and vegetables from a wet market. She didn’t buy those donuts often as she preferred sticky rice cake snacks in different colors and sizes from donuts. Maybe if I told her that I really liked the donuts then maybe she would have bought them more often.
I do miss those days when I was a child.
